Yes, ladies, the ‘90s lip is back.
I have some very fond memories of my high school years—that was the time when I went to my very first soirée, designed my own prom dress and bought my very first lipstick. I still remember the shade of my first lippie; it was Chelsea. It was a brick brown, heavily matte lippie that felt really uncomfortably dry on my lips but I wore it, and I wore it proud because it was a hue that all the girls my age were sporting that time, and admittedly, did look pretty cool.
Fast forward to today, all the It-Girls and models-of-the-moment are sporting the same look, and I can understand why—the brown lip is like the anti-pretty statement. It’s meant to appear rebellious yet still manages to look fantastic against a minimally made-up face. This grunge trend is calling out girls from every corner of the globe, and we love it.
To date, I’ve tried a lot of brown-hued lippies but I must say that Hourglass’ Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Peace is probably one of the best ones I’ve come across. It’s neither sheer nor opaque, so it doesn’t show as too severe. I also love that it has a velvety finish. Unlike most matte finishes that tend to make the lines on your lips appear even more pronounced, this formulation goes on smoothly and feels comfortable on your lips the entire day. The pigment is also noticeably strong so retouching is kept at a minimum. I can say, without a doubt, this one’s a keeper.
