Comedones are flesh-colored bumps on the skin frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne or “zits”. Open comedones are known as blackheads and the closed ones, whiteheads. Ingredients in beauty products that cause comedones are called comedogenic. Unfortunately, these acne-causing ingredients are found in makeup, sun care, and even in acne products. If you are prone to zits then you must avoid using products which contain these ingredients that have a high rating on the “must avoid” list.
1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or detergent is found in most cleansers and leaves a film on the skin which clogs pores. It also strips the skin of natural oils making you produce more oil which leads to zits.
2. Isopropyl Myristate is found in Retin-A creams which are used to treat acne. Before buying, read the label carefully.
3. Bismuth Oxychloride is the main ingredient in most powder foundations including mineral make up formulas. It causes cystic acne. That’s why it is very important to take all the make up off before going to bed.
4. Isopropyl linolate which are basically fatty acids found in moisturizers. Switch to an oil-free moisturizer instead.
5. Wheat germ oil is an essential oil that’s great only for people not prone to acne. It is found in a lot of vitamins, supplements and skin oils. It has a highly comedogenic properties that may even cause acne.
