While water-based makeup is totally creating all the buzz in the Asian beauty world right now, there is an even bigger buzz that levels up this water-based wonder into a whole different level with the introduction of water essence into the cosmetic aqua game! Micellar, toner, and mist are so last season! Say hello to essences!
Flare magazine says that while Europeans enjoy their share of rich creamy formulas, Asian beauties are more into the natural and light-textured side of the spectrum, which gave rise to the popularity of “watery care”. According to Florence Bernardin, founder of Information & Inspiration, the agency that tips brands like L’Oreal on the latest news in the beauty market, more than 90% of Japanese women use cosmetic water in their beauty regimens. It’s famous for helping women achieve that effortlessly glowing look!
What is water essence?
Typically used for post-cleansing, an essence is a liquid concentrate meant to add hydration. It’s a step that comes after you apply serum and before you put on your moisturizer. According to New York dermatologist, Dr. Gee Young Bae, water essence prepares skin for better absorption of the next formula. Products that contain water essence are highly more hydrating, although this does not necessarily mean you can opt to skip out on your regular moisturizer.
How do you use water essence?
Water essence is more commonly found in facial toners for post-cleansing. But unlike your usual alcohol-based toners, they’re very gentle on the skin yet highly effective in cleansing and toning with the added benefit of providing a blast of moisture to your skin. Although aside from being a skincare must-have, this ingredient is slowly paving its way to the very heart of makeup.
Maybelline has just launched their very first Super BB Fresh Matte with 80% water essence blended with water lily and aloe vera extract. This is Maybelline’s first high-hydration gel that nourishes and hydrates while providing a flawless matte cover for that non-greasy feel that will last all day. Perfect for both dry and oily skin types alike as this BB cream provides hydration without the oily finish!
