While we all wish for lush thick hair on our heads, it’s highly unlikely you’d wish the same sentiments on any other place of your body.
Hair removal can come in a variety of forms and prices. With the summer heart in full swing and the opportunity to wear as little as possible, here are some of your options to banish your hairy situation.
Shaving
How it works: A blade slices through the hair leaving the roots at the bottom.
Tips: Shaving is the quickest and easiest way to guarantee you’ve got smooth legs for an impromptu dinner date. Be sure to use a shaving cream that’s thick enough to not let the blade wreak havoc on your skin. Also opt for a double bladed razor for a smoother and longer lasting shave.
Cons: Because the roots stay in place, hair often sprouts back after just a day or two and is often more coarse.
Body parts: Legs, bikini area, and underarms. Ladies, don’t even think about using a razor on your face.
Waxing
How it works: Warm or cold wax made from resins or sugar is placed on the skin then yanked to pull the hair out from the roots.
Tips: If you have a choice, opt for the sugar wax mixture, they are easier to clean off the skin and any clothing. It’s always good to do a test patch first, because waxing can often cause some skin irritations.
Cons: Not for those who can’t take pain. Though, when done by a skilled technician it’s actually bearable.
Body parts: Legs, arms, underarms, and bikini area
Threading
How it works: A skilled technician weaves thread through her fingers, twisting it as it touches your skin to catch the hair and pull it out from the roots.
Tips: Threading is best for small areas and has less irritation than waxing. It’s also one of the best ways to shape eyebrows. Allow your eyebrows to grow out first before making that appointment so they can give you the ideal shape.
Cons: Actually quite painful when done the first time and quite time consuming when done on big parts of the body.
Body parts: Threading works best on finer hairs. Eyebrows, top of lip, cheeks
Depilatory
How it works: A chemical cream is placed on the skin to dissolve hair. The roots still remain at the bottom.
Tips: Be sure to patch test before putting on large portions of your skin, it can be highly irritating. Be sure to use in a well-ventilated area.
Cons: It smells terrible and actually makes hair mushy. Oftentimes you still have to gently scrub the area to help the hair detach. A tad gross actually.
Body parts: underarms, legs, and bikini area.
Laser
How it works: A laser is sent directly under your skin to kill the hair at the follicle.
Tips: Be sure to go to a reputable dermatologist for this type of treatment. Permanent damage can be done on the skin in the wrong hands.
Cons: It takes more than a few sessions to see permanent results and isn’t cheap. It’s also pretty painful and may require a topical anesthetic.
