Fighting Skin Inflammation

By: Amanda Padilla

I’ve been personally acquainted with all sorts of skin inflammation problems. Psoriasis, which is when your skin gets patches that are extremely dry and scaly, eczema, when skin that is dry, irritated and feels uncomfortable; both run in the family. I have tried a countless number of lotions and potions in an attempt to soothe my red, painful, cracked skin. I’ve also been victim to inflamed acne. This is a pimple on overdrive – the kind that is swollen and red, it looks more like a mosquito bite. It hurts when you move your face and makes you want to hide under a rock until it goes away.

There are various triggers for skin inflammation. Weather, certain kinds of jewelry, some laundry detergents are things that have made my skin go haywire. Smoking, pollution, stress and lack of sleep can also contribute to it. In the end though, it all boils down to one major factor – diet. You might be surprised to find out that extremely inflammatory food are staples in our everyday diet. I won’t sugarcoat it, totally avoiding these types of foods is going to be a challenge. But trust me, as soon as you start eating clean, your inflamed skin going to clear up almost immediately. Here’s a list of food to avoid:

All dairy products, Gluten (found in wheat, rye, barley), sugar, refined starches, processed/fast food, alcohol, vegetable oils (canola, corn, sunflower, soybean, etc.), red meat, processed corn, peanuts

Supplement your diet with these anti-inflammatory foods:

Leafy greens, turmeric, blueberries, ginger, broccoli, cherries, basil, rosemary, extra virgin olive oil, sweet potato, flaxseed, broccoli, cabbage, chia seeds, fermented foods like kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut, shiitake mushrooms, avocado

Some of these foods are so soothing for inflamed skin that even putting it on you skin can be helpful. Mash an avocado and use it ask a mask on extremely dry and cracked skin. Leave it on for 10 minutes and see the difference. Using honey as a mask is also another great homeopathic solution for this. Applying cucumber slices to the affected areas is a effective way to relieve itchy, uncomfortable, irritated skin.
