Just when we thought nothing could challenge our brain cells more than the chicken vs. egg question, here we are met with another “which comes first” dilemma in our adulthood. So essence, ampoule, serum, and emulsion—which do we apply first?
Also, what’s the difference of each?
Well, don’t let the terms confuse you. Below is a quick guide on the benefits and use of each, and how to incorporate them into your skincare routines!
SERUM
Serums usually come in little bottles with droppers, making you feel as if you’re sort of applying a powerful chemical on your face. Well, you’re not entirely wrong. Serums are actually very potent and powerful, super-concentrated formulas that target specific skin concerns. These are usually lightweight, thin, and gel-like in consistency.
Benefits: Suffice to say, there’s a serum for every skincare need—from anti-aging, to treating dark spots, or bringing back your skin’s vitality.
When to Use: Serums can be applied under your sunscreen during the day, or before your moisturizer at night.
EMULSION
Emulsions are lighter than creams and lotions, but thicker than serums. It allows your skin to drink up all the moisturizing ingredients without it feeling too thick or heavy. Its formula is also less concentrated compared to serums.
Benefits: Hydration and moisture
When to Use: Regularly; or when you’ve just come from a winter trip or a flight that may have dried out your skin.
ESSENCE
Often referred to as the “heart” or the “epicenter” of the Korean skincare routine, essences are said to be the most essential (pun intended) of the lot, as its creamy and gel-like formula penetrates on a skin-deep level.
Benefits: Skin hydration from within!
When to Use: Best used in the evening, to give your skin more time to absorb and soak in all the good ingredients! Do away with a cotton pad and use your fingers to apply an essence, as the warmth and pressure from your hand will help boost your skin’s circulation for better absorption.
AMPOULE
With a formula that has higher concentrations of a specific active ingredient, think of ampoules as “super serums.” Like serums, you choose an ampoule that’s packed with the ingredient best recommended to address your current skin issue.
Benefits: Ampoules can help promote collagen, add moisture to your skin, and restore the health of your skin.
When to Use: Best for when you’re having a skin crisis, or your usual regimen needs an added boost.
The golden rule when it comes to layering skincare products? Start with the thinnest and most lightweight one, to the thickest. After cleansing and toning, apply your products according to this order:
