DIY Spa Treatments

Who doesn’t enjoy a spa treatment every now and then? I used to try to treat myself to a day of pampering monthly. I’ve since cut down for a bunch of reasons: I can’t be bothered to leave my house after a long day at work, I’d rather spend my money in other ways, I’m more particular about the products that are used. Pick up any beauty product and take a look at the list of ingredients—more often than not you’ll see a laundry list of words, most completely foreign to us. My new rule is if I can’t pronounce it, I don’t want it on my skin. Simpler is often better and the kitchen is one of the best places to find remedies for your skin issues.

Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

For Irritated Skin

  • 1 Avocado
  • 1 Spoonful of honey
  • 1 Spoonful of heavy cream

Blend all the ingredients together. Apply on face and neck; leave for 15 minutes. You will notice your skin looks calmer and feels more comfortable.

For Deep Hair Conditioning:

  • 1 Egg yolk
  • 1 Avocado
  • 1 Spoonful of mayonnaise
  • 1 Spoonful of olive oil

Blend all the ingredients together and completely cover your hair with the mixture. Put a shower cap on and leave for at least an hour. Rinse and shampoo after.

Body Scrub:

  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 2 pieces of calamansi
  • Coconut oil

Add all the ingredients together and stir until it is mixed well. The scrub can last up to one month if stored in a cool, dry place and is well sealed. Apply on dry skin and use on entire body (not face) twice a week. Your skin will smell amazing and be the softest its ever been!

Quick Fixes:

  • -For extremely dry hair and scalp, apply warm olive oil. Use a generous amount. Put hair in a shower cap and leave overnight. Shampoo after.
  • -Rub a lemon on elbows, knees and anywhere with rough skin to lighten and soften the said areas.
  • -Mix baker’s yeast and mix with water until you create a paste. Put on inflamed pimples and leave overnight. This is the most effective acne treatment!
  • -Rinsing hair with beer makes dull hair look shiny. Don’t worry, once the hair dries the smell of alcohol completely goes away.
