6 Holy Grail Cleansers for Waterproof Makeup

Exhausted at the end of the day, the last thing you want to do is spend time removing all your makeup. I get it. As tempting as it is to reach for a makeup wipe and call it a day, you might actually be doing more harm than good to your face by not using the right makeup remover.

Not all makeup products are created equal, and knowing which remover is best for the job is practically skin care 101. But with so many makeup removers on the market, how’s a girl to choose? Brands aside, should you go for a water-based or oil-based remover? What’s the difference anyway? Here’s a quick breakdown on both and of course, the best removers to grab here on Calyxta!

A safe and effective choice for practically any skin type, especially sensitive skin, water-based makeup removers are perfect for removing your typical slew of light, everyday makeup. BB cream, lip gloss, eyeshadow, and the like can easily be wiped clean and away with a good, water-based remover. Compared to cleansing oils, water-based removers are also meant to be used with cotton pads or balls and don’t need to be rinsed off.

Best for those with combination to dry skin, oil-based makeup removers are “heavier” than water-based removers. They still contain some water-based ingredients though, which is why they don’t tend to leave behind an oily residue. If you want a makeup remover that’s tougher, but still gentle enough on skin, an oil-based one is the way to go.

For ultra-deep cleaning action, reach for an oil cleanser instead. With a thicker formula, even the most stubborn makeup, like mascara and super matte lipsticks, don’t stand a chance. Cleansing oils are great if you’ve got dry or dehydrated skin, and they help balance out your skin’s oil production, too.
