Ever since Chanel muse Kristen Stewart stepped out wearing red all over — lips, cheeks, and eyes, the beauty world has gone mad for the red makeup.
Red has always been a staple for lips. We’ve seen it worn in sheer, matte, shiny and glitter-y, and yet, red has never, ever, become a mainstream makeup look for the eyes and cheeks. This has changed in the last few weeks as more and more celebs have been sporting the look all over — and surprisingly, it is a look that we’d totally cop.
Although red may be regarded as a somewhat risky shade, the important thing to consider is which type of red to wear, and how much of it. Burgundy, for instance, is a much more wearable hue over red-orange for the eyes.
It also helps if you opt to go with a monochromatic look. This means that you stay within the same color family when pairing your lip color with your eye shadow shade. Another tip that most makeup artists will agree on is to blend, blend, and blend! Red has a tendency to look chalky and dirty but when blended well, it looks absolutely elegant.
If you aren’t too keen on wearing red all over, experiment in small doses. Using red eyeliner for instance, adds a pop of color to your peepers. Just remember, you want the color to look bold and bright on purpose. Applying something too sheer may end making you look like you’ve got an allergy or a nasty flare up.
Lastly, go with your gut. Try on a range of reds to see which ones suit you the most. Ideally, those with fairer skin will look great wearing blue-red tones while those with more tanned skin will benefit most from terracotta and earthy reds.
