All the nail tools you need for an easy DIY manicure

We’ve all been through those days when we simply don’t have the time to head over to the nail salon to have our hands pampered. No need for dismay! Doing the manicure yourself isn’t as hard as you think. All you need is to arm yourself with the right tools to achieve that perfect mani even when you do it at home.

  1. Nail trimmer

This can’t be just any nail trimmer. The blade must be sharp. Otherwise, you will end up with a snagging problem wherein the nail gets pulled and damaged in the process. The goal is to create a clean cut, then follow with nail filing.

  1. Nail file

These days, ceramic nail files are getting all the buzz because of their unique ability to smoothly shape nails. Remember the technique we learned from our nail technicians: Make sure to file the center portion straight, then round off the edges to create a “squoval” (mix of square and oval) shape. These nail experts find the “squoval” shape to be the most ideal because it is the least prone to breakage. Plus, it’s also the most flattering and wearable shape.

  1. Orange stick

Choose orange sticks or wooden sticks instead of metal pushers. The latter tends to scrape off the nail bed needlessly. A wooden stick sloughs off just a thin layer, allowing nails to maintain their strength and thickness.

  1. Nipper

Ladies, don’t forget that a nipper should only be used to remove visible hangnails or hard skin—never to remove cuticles. Cuticles protect the nail bed from germs and bacteria so don’t trim them. Instead, they should be pushed back with the use of damp cotton wrapped onto the slanted end of a wooden stick.

  1. Buffer

This multi-textured block serves many purposes including getting rid of unevenness, ridges and stains, as well as giving nails a beautiful, natural shine. Avoid nails from being over-buffed because this can lead to nail thinning, and eventually nail splitting.
