How to Make Your Own Hair Mask

By: Cat Juan-Ledesma

You don’t have to look further than your kitchen cabinet for ingredients that will offer your hair deep conditioning and shine. Here are some hair-friendly kitchen products you might want to try. Feel free to use these items on their own or mix them together to make a potent hair mask of your choice.

Virgin Coconut Oil

VCO has been raved about for years as the wonder oil. High in lauric acid (the same ingredient in super nutritious breast milk), this oil can be used to bring shine and life back to your hair. Simply spread evenly on damp hair and leave for an hour before rinsing off.

Egg yolk

Egg yolks are filled with good-for-you vitamins like A, B, D and also have proteins that help strengthen the hair strands. You can beat an egg yolk with virgin coconut oil, milk, or olive oil to help it spread. Just be sure to rinse with cold water because hot water might cook the egg while in your hair. Once rinsed off shampoo as usual.

Avocado

Avocado is my personal favorite. This fatty fruit is so easy to use. Simply mash up and spread on hair like conditioner. It doesn’t have a strong scent and leaves hair soft after leaving on for just an hour.

Yogurt

Rich in lactic acid and enzymes to soften hair. Yogurt works quite nicely to clarify the hair as well.

Honey

Nourishing and anti-bacterial. Honey also works well as a face cleaner. You can add this to your hair mask where it will serve as a humectant and bring in moisture.

Tips for using hair masks:

1. Hair masks work best when left on the hair for longer than 30 minutes. So decide to use one when you have the time to spare.

2. Invest in a good shower cap. You don’t want stains on any of your towels or clothes.

3. Choose a well-scented shampoo to rinse the mask off after. Many of these ingredients have smells you might not find too appealing throughout the day.
