How to Cover Up Gray Hair

By: Cat Juan-Ledesma

You wake up one morning, do your usual routine, but something is amiss. You catch a glimmer in your reflection, a piece of white where there shouldn’t be any waving at you from its perch. Ladies and gentlemen, meet your first white hair — a sight that everyone who hasn’t experienced it yet (myself included) is anticipating with dread.

I believe that knowing is half the battle. So here are the tips I’ve received along the way to help ease this transition into aging that we all must face eventually.

Snip them off

For the first few years, you might be harassed by just a few strands. My suggestion would be to find a loving partner who will take the time to find them and snip them at their roots without taking any casualties along. I did this for my husband for many years. I don’t recommend plucking them out. Every hair follicle is precious and you might be left with a bald area later on.

Get professional help

When it’s finally time to color them, seek the help of a professional hair colorist to find the right shade. Remember that white hair is coarser, which might make it harder for color to penetrate the strands. You’re taking a big risk by trying a box from the drugstore without some professional advice first. You might also want to look into some highlights, which will give you a little more time between sessions.

Touch ups are key

It’s suggested that you color your roots every four weeks, so while waiting you don’t have to suffer. Change the part of your hair to help add body, which makes it less likely to see gray and invest in a product like Cover Your Gray which a great way to mask gray roots in between sessions, it also has follicle-strengthening ingredients to promote hair growth.

How do you maintain your gray hair? I’d love to hear all about it in our forums section.
