Chances are you’ve lived your whole life believing that hair should be washed daily. The truth is that we’ve probably been over-washing and could stand to skip a day or two of shampooing. Think of hair as a fiber. The more times you wash it, the more it looks frayed and ragged.
So how often should you lather up? People with long, curly or processed hair only need to shampoo around 3 times a week because it takes longer for the oils from your scalp to travel down the hair shaft. Washing more frequently could result in dry looking hair that is coarse and prone to breakage. People with normal hair type should wash their hair 4-5 times a week. And even people who tend to get oily hair could skip a day between washings. A lot of times, our scalp over produces oils because of frequent shampooing. Shampoos strip the natural oils from the scalp, so it reacts by over producing oils making hair look greasy. Try using dry shampoo in between washes to keep the oiliness of your hair at bay.
Now you might want to rinse your hair more frequently if you live somewhere that is humid, polluted or if you workout everyday. Here’s a trick, on non-shampoo days, rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water then only condition the hair. This will wash away all the dirt from your hair and leave it smelling fresh but not stripped of its nutrients. If you do choose to continue to wash your hair daily, make sure that you use a lightweight shampoo that is free from sodium chloride and sulfates which leave your scalp dry and irritated. Finally, remember to target the shampoo towards the scalp area. Then pay special attention to the tips of your hair by applying most of the conditioner in that area.
