Whether you’ve decided to go pin-straight or go for full-on volume with curls, what matters most is the method by which you’re going to achieve your dream ‘do. The most important things to consider are time, tools and texture.
If you’re pressed for time, I recommend forgoing the whole stick-straight Jen Aniston-esque look or Victoria’s Secret bombshell waves as you’ll only end up disappointed. I assure you, doing your hair in a haphazard way, paying little attention to sectioning will only make you end up with a half-baked ‘do. Go for a cute updo instead like a high ponytail or top bun—it’ll only take up 5 minutes of your time. If you don’t think you’ll have enough time in the morning to iron or curl-iron your mane, try doing some prepping the night before. That way, half the job can be done, and you’ll only need just a few minutes more in the morning to finish the job.
It’s also a MUST to be armed with the right tools. I’m an advocate of high heat—at least 280 degrees because this really gets the job done. Irons that take a while to heat up or have a low maximum temperature will usually slow down the entire process, and won’t be able to handle frizz well. It will also mean that you’ll have to do smaller sections and do several passes per section just to get the results you want.
Intense heat however also requires that you protect your locks from damage. This can be achieved with the use of a heat-protecting spray. My fave one is from a well-known and trusted hair care brand, Toni&Guy. Their Heat Protection Mist High Temperature Protection helps protect against damage and breakage caused from heat styling. To use, simply spray each section of dried hair prior to ironing.
As a finishing touch, you’ll want to think about the texture you’re going for. I personally like shine and softness when hair is straight, and for that, you’ll need to rely on a serum. Serums are best for addressing frizz and fly-aways and also grant high-wattage shine. Try Toni&Guy’s Glamour Serum Drops—it’s armed with essential oils that coat and condition every strand. The trend for curls or waves on the other hand, has changed quite a bit. Gone are days of pageant curls that look 100% perfect. The way to wear curls now is to give them an unfinished, almost raw appeal. To get this look, you’ll need a finishing product with some sea salt in it. Toni&Guy’s Sea Salt Texturising Spray is perfect as it creates texture and hold so you know you’ll be sporting that sexy, surfer chic vibe all day long.
