There seems to be no shortage of extreme hair trends. At Coachella, a ton of girls are rocking candy-colored locks. Before that, people were loving the silvery purple hair of Kelly Osbourne and Nicole Ritchie. No doubt that trying crazy hair colors can be lots of fun, but at the end of the day, it’s still important to know which hair color makes us look our best.
When picking a hair color, there is one key thing to consider that makes or breaks your color choice: your skin’s undertone.
Finding your undertone is actually quite easy. In general, most Asians have warm undertones and skin looks a little bit yellow. Caucasian have cool undertones and have pinkish skin.
Here’s another way to find out your undertone, check the veins on the inside of your wrist. If your veins look green then you have skin with warm undertones, if they look blue then you have cool undertones.
Now to pick the hair color that will complement you best, choose color that has the opposite undertone as your skin. Hair colors like strawberry blonde, honey and chocolate brown, or auburn bring warmth to someone with cool undertoned skin. Whereas colors like ash blondes and browns, walnut, and mahogany brighten up the complexion of those with warm undertones. Choosing a hair color that has the same undertone as your skin is not recommended because it tends to make you look washed out. Dyeing your hair the opposite color makes your skin stand out and highlights your features.
Another helpful tip is to pick a hair color that is just a few shades lighter or darker than your natural hair color. The most flattering hair color on you will be something that isn’t very far from it.
