You don’t have to be a big follower of Philippine show business to know who Liza Soberano is. This 18-year-old model and actress—currently with a successful prime time television series under the country’s biggest television network, and who also happens to be one half of the very famous and beautiful LizQuen (Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil) love team—is now Maybelline New York’s newest Maybelline Girl.
With undeniable fame and unmatched beauty attached to her name, it’s hard to imagine Liza Soberano as anything but confident. She says, though, that it hasn’t always been the case. “Before, when I just started, I wasn’t that confident. I was scared to talk in front of people,” she shares. “Actually, it took me a while before I could fully adjust to the spotlight. I was really shy at first and I couldn’t smile right in front of the camera.”
On discovering makeup and finding self-confidence
“The first time I bought my own makeup, I was modeling already then. I remember I bought Maybelline mascara and Baby Lips,” she says of her first real experience with makeup, not counting the instances throughout her childhood when her family would catch her playing with her mother’s lipstick, most of it smeared all over her face.
Liza honestly admits that it wasn’t until she started really using makeup that she felt more comfortable in her own skin in the limelight. “I guess when I started exploring putting on makeup and stuff, it really boosted my confidence by a lot because it started making me feel prettier…and it started making me feel more like an artista.”
How she keeps her beauty always on point
It’s not easy being in Liza Soberano’s shoes, though, what with the constantly packed schedule that comes with being one of the country’s most in-demand teen stars. She admits that taping for her TV show can go on for more than 24 hours straight at a time, which makes you wonder how she keeps herself and her beauty together. “Well, I always go home late. I always try to wash my face the moment I finish taping because having makeup for too long can really damage your skin. And when I can, I rest because nobody wants eyebags,” she says of the beauty rules she cannot let herself break, no matter the circumstance. “And of course, proper hygiene to make sure you’re always clean so when people smell you, you smell good!”
She is no longer a novice in the entertainment industry and it shows. “Makeup is a big factor in making me feel beautiful and confident.” When asked about the one makeup item that gives her the biggest confidence boost, Liza easily answers with lipstick. “Because, of course, it brings you a long way. You don’t really need to do anything when you have a good color on—it completes your total look.” She admits to being a big fan of matte lipsticks in nude shades. Other items she can’t leave the house without are an eyelash curler and a good eyebrow product.
Speaking of eyebrows, Liza is particularly known for having beautiful, naturally full brows that many women can only dream of having—eyebrows that are ‘on fleek,’ if you will. “I don’t like to shave them. I pluck them only,” she says of how she maintains her brows. And a trick to achieving that trademark Liza Soberano brow look? “When I do my brows, I don’t like to use brown that much. I like to use greyish colors because they match my hair color.”
Beauty that’s more than skin deep
But Liza Soberano’s beauty goes beyond aesthetics. Besides the makeup, she also pulls her newfound confidence from something especially important in the world of show business. “I feel confident when I’m being myself and when I’m not trying to be someone everybody else wants me to be,” she shares.
This strength of character is why Maybelline New York picked her to be their newest It Girl. “A Maybelline girl doesn’t let any obstacle come her way. She makes it happen,” Liza says. “For me, [Maybelline’s] Make It Happen means you don’t allow anything to stop you [from achieving] whatever it may be that you want to do. If you want to become an actress, a model, a singer…it doesn’t have to be those huge jobs that everybody sees what you’re doing. But just to make it happen and to make yourself happy, that’s what it is.”
Spoken like a true Maybelline Girl.
