How to Prevent Ponytail Hair Damage

By: Amanda Padilla

I’m a huge fan of the ponytail. It is the easiest, most fuss-free hairdo one can have. I can literally say there were years that I did nothing with my hair but put it in a ponytail or a bun. This was not the best idea. I started noticing that my hair was getting thinner and there was a lot of breakage and split ends. In an attempt to get my hair healthy again, changes were made. Here is how to prevent this from happening to you.

1. Throw out all hair-ties that have a metal fastener. The metal portion of the hair-tie that causes a lot of damage to the hair follicle due to its sharp edges. Hair also gets snagged on this part and can get yanked out when you undo your ‘do. Use seamless silicon or fabric hair-ties.

2. Never tie your have when it is wet. Your hair is at its most delicate when it is damp; tying it in this state is a sure-fire way to cause breakage, especially when it is done over and over again.

3. Vary your hairstyle everyday. Even if the ponytail is your signature look there are ways to create options for this look. Tie your hair at different heights- do a high ponytail today, a low side ponytail tomorrow. If you tie your hair at the same spot all the time it creates a stress point where you will see a lot of the breakage. Why not try a half ponytail or a french braid while you’re at it?

4. When undoing your ponytail, be gentle. Usually we get rid of it using a strong tug. Try to remove it with care as to not pull out any healthy hair from your head.

5. Do not tie your hair too tight. Doing this over time will cause your hairline to recede. Buy a good quality ponytail that keeps hair in place even if you loop it just a couple of times.
