Co-washing, or conditioner only washing, is a hair trend that has been creeping on us for the last few years. Shampoos can be very harsh and drying on the hair because all the chemicals, sulfates and detergents found in them. It leaves your hair squeaky clean which, ironically, is not a good thing. Shampoos can cause damage and breakage especially on those of us with dry, damaged, brittle and curly hair. Enter cleansing conditioners, a one-step solution for people who want to co-wash. It has gentle cleaning agents in its formulation without the harshness of a shampoo because it is detergent-free and sulfate. The ‘no-poo’ movement is on the rise, go ahead and try it.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when using a cleansing conditioner:
What is your hair type? Cleansing conditioners work like a charm on textured, dry and damaged hair because they restore lost moisture to the hair. It’s great for curly hair, which tends to be on the dry side, giving it more definition as well as shine and bounce. If you have limp hair or an oily scalp cleansing conditioners might not be the best for you because it could weigh your hair down, especially if the cleansing conditioner has a lot of silicone in it. You also might want to alternate between a cleansing conditioner and a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo to prevent oil buildup in the hair.
It’s a little different from traditional shampoo because cleansing conditioners do not lather. You aren’t going to see any suds at all. Also, you also have to use a lot more product on your hair than you would with a regular shampoo. Apply an amount that is enough to generously coat your hair and let it sit for at least five minutes.
