There are many reasons why we get zits. If you’re blessed with flawless skin or if you’ve never had this problem, you’ve got your genes to thank. The rest of us aren’t so lucky. Read up if constant breakouts seem to plague you. Believe it or not, bad habits are the cause of pesky flare-ups. If your zits don’t clear up within 2 weeks, then it’s time to hit the derma – the problem might need medical attention.
1. Don’t pick or squeeze your zits. I know sometimes it can really be tempting, but so much bacteria breeds on our fingers. Picking or squeezing may breed more zits and worse, might cause infection if you don’t know how to properly extract a pimple.
2. If you must extract a zit, I suggest using two pieces of cotton buds instead of your fingers. Push and squeeze your zit lightly. If stuff comes out like pus or blood you can wipe it off quickly and not get any of the gunk on your fingers.
3. Do not, I repeat, do not sleep with make up on. If you’re too lazy or inebriated after a night out, have a pack of makeup wipes beside your bed at all times. This way you can clean your face without having to go to the sink. Or if you wake up in the middle of the night, wipes are just within reach.
4. Are your breakouts around the mouth? It might be your toothpaste. Try using a cup when rinsing instead of just your hands. A lot of people breakout around the mouth because of the froth from the toothpaste. Don’t worry, this is normal. If your breakouts persist consider switching to another toothpaste brand.
5. If you are into junk food like me, make sure to wash your hands after eating french fries, pizza, chips, nuts, sweets. Just imagine all that pizza grease you are transferring onto your skin. Eew!
6. Give your phone a good wipe down. This applies to both your landline and cellphone. Jaw and cheek breakouts maybe caused by a dirty phone.
7. Change your pillowcase every 3 days. Oil, dirt, grease from skincare/hair products can be trapped in your pillow. So make sure pillowcases are always fresh.
8. When you don’t need to, don’t wear any make up. Daily use of foundation may clog the pores. Check the expiration date and wash the sponge regularly if your foundation comes in a compact.
9. Boil two cups of water, transfer to a big bowl and steam your face. Sometimes dirt and oil gets trapped in the pores. Hold a towel over your head like a hood to catch all the steam. Splash with cold water or run an ice cube over your face to close the pores.
10. Use a skin-brightening mask, or a pore-minimizing mask. I layer on a bit more where there is a zit or on my t-zone where it’s extra oily. I usually do a facemask ten minutes before a shower then rinse off completely in one go. Run an ice cube or splash with ice cold water to tighten the pores and reduce swelling of any pimples.
